Description

GPALA Presents: 2016 Annual 2-Day Conference

The Power of Shame in Group Psychotherapy:
Discover the Evolution, Practice and Power of the Omnipotent Child Theory

Featuring Stewart Aledort, MD, CGP, FAGPA

Initially basing his work on the object relations theories of Margaret Mahler, Dr. Aledort has developed an innovative group approach that uses original and powerful concepts such as the Omnipotent Child and the Passionate Bad-Fit. One of his great contributions has been to identify the role that shame plays in maintaining and reinforcing the Omnipotent Child. Dr. Aledort is unparalleled in understanding how much passion is contained in shame, which he calls the Passionate Bad-Fit. Uprooting the Omnipotent Child requires courage and tenaciousness, and Dr. Aledort doggedly traces the roots of shame that keep the Omnipotent Child alive in his work with groups.
Dr. Aledort uses his own physical presence to support this work, referencing his metaphorical “lap” and making it available to the group. Using this metaphor, he literally becomes a maternal space that is safe, exciting, setting the stage for personal development. Dr. Aledort holds the group members so that they can tolerate the emptiness and uncertainty of a world without the Omnipotent Child and experience living with the Passionate Good-Fit.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Over the course of this conference, Dr. Stewart Aledort will demonstrate his theory of the Omnipotent Child through a combination of lecture, demonstration group, and participant driven inquiry. Dr. Aledort will explore the therapist’s role in attempting to locate and work with the hidden passions in shame. Understandings of the therapist’s “bigness,” explored through the illustration of the therapist’s lap will drive exploration of early misattunements and their impact on the group dynamic, both within patients and therapist. Hidden somatic workings of excitement will be illuminated and discussed in relationship to the origins and working through of shame in the patient, group and therapist.
